Super Mario Party Jamboree, released on October 17, 2024, for the Nintendo Switch, is the thirteenth entry in the popular Mario Party series for home consoles. This latest game brings back the well-loved board game style while adding some fresh ideas. It aims to be fun for both long-time fans and newbies.
Me and my family have played the past few Mario Party games, and while there was a bit of a learning curve to this newest iteration, it has quickly found a home in our hearts. (although we do miss some features from the most recent game, like uncapped buddy spaces, and certain cooking minigames)
At its heart, Super Mario Party Jamboree keeps the classic turn-based board game setup. Here, up to four players race to collect as many stars as they can within a set number of turns. The game includes 22 playable characters, introducing new faces like Pauline and Ninji, giving players a good mix of characters they love.
One of the cool new features is the "Jamboree Buddies" system. These allies provide unique skills that can change the game, adding a layer of strategy. The game also includes “Pro Rules,” which cuts down on luck-based elements for those who prefer skill-based play.
Apart from the board game, there are several other modes. The single-player “Party Planner Trek” mode has mission-based challenges. “Minigame Bay” lets players freely enjoy 112 minigames. For motion-control fans, there are modes like “Rhythm Kitchen,” “Toad’s Item Factory,” and “Paratroopa Flight School,” making good use of the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con controllers.
Super Mario Party Jamboree shines in its multiplayer modes, offering both local and online play. The “Bowser Kaboom Squad” mode allows up to eight players to team up against Impostor Bowser, while “Koopathlon” is a competitive race for up to 20 players. These modes make the game more fun for larger groups and add to its replay value.
The game did well in sales, debuting at the top of the charts in Japan with 227,569 copies sold. In the UK, its first-week sales were 35% higher than its predecessor, Mario Party Superstars.
Super Mario Party Jamboree showcases the lasting charm of the Mario Party series. It mixes old favorites with new twists and gives an enjoyable experience for both new players and veteran fans. Whether playing alone or with friends, Jamboree is a fun addition to the Nintendo Switch library, ensuring the party continues.
